I'm not dead yet...

and I haven't broken any bones on this skateboard thing. Sure, I've only gained the courage to ride for about 15 minutes when all the neighbors were inside, with their blinds drawn so I couldn't see the snickering. I feel like such a goober on the board, but you know what? It's buckets of fun. Oh yes. I feel very brittle and fragile when I'm gliding along but it still feels good. Lately, I've been thinking about when I was young and would hear adults complaining about pain in (insert body part here). I thought how odd it must be to have a body that hurt, even if you had done nothing to hurt it (falling off a skateboard, crashing a bike). I would have a brief moment of gratefulness that my body was supple and strong, strap on my skates and go. I know falling is going to be inevitable and I'm trying to get over the fear. I've never learned to fall properly and I'll be sure to have some bony body part or hand out trying to break my fall. I'm hoping that my body doesn't complain too much. I'm hoping I'll get to feel a little bit more supple and strong again.

You know what? You're out there. You're on the board. You are a skateycaking mama. Bring on the fear...it's how you know you're alive!

I think fear is how you know you're afraid, personally. I recommend wearing pads, and lots of 'em.

My old CD, Stan Byers is, like, 500 years old and he still rides pools, so I know you can at least pull some rails slides!

P.S. If you lived here in PDX, you'd have your own commuter lane.

But I guess that's really more weird than enticing.

Hmmm, there is some enticement with communter lanes, but I'm weird.

Perhaps a few pads would not be a bad idea. Hubby is pushing for a helmet in the interest of "the kid sees you in a helmet so she realizes she has to wear a helmet". But I already feel dorky enough without a helmet!

I am so buying you a helmet. we can put all sorts of kick-arse stickers on it, then it will be cool.

I am glad you haven't broken anything yet... now I want a board!

ps any interest in gathering in a week or two for knitting, maybe thrifting and possibly a stop to a photobooth?

Okay, not to pull out my mother-voice, which I don't often use, but you must wear a helmet. Two kids in Omaha died last summer after skateboard crashes. Yes, they were doing tricks at a park with ramps and you're just noodling down the sidewalk, but you gottagottagotta do the helmet thing. Think of all the cool stickers you can make/buy and put on the helmet!

Ok, ok...Mama, Nessie and Justin, a helmet will be ordered. Who knew that my noggin held such precious cargo?

Nessie, join KM's and my girl skate gang! Woo hoo! And I'd love to get together again. Maybe next weekend?
