Corner View...Whoops!

Well, I spent a lot more time looking at this than the city this weekend. We took a little field trip out to the desert to do a little rockhounding and fossil hunting. It was great to get away from the usual weekend routine of trying to fit in yardwork amongst the errands. I'll be back with a proper Corner View next week. Until then, drink up the city life with...

good times a'comin'

Snow cones, log rides, warmth, friends, family, malts, wine, possibly a field trip, muffulettas, and shenanigans. What's on tap for your weekend?

Four Years Ago

...we lost my Papa.

Dang it, you and Kidlet would have been best friends. I also found some new good, cheap wines. You are seriously missed.

I took this photo about 30 years ago with a little instamatic while we were on an epic vacation.
We had many happy times.

Corner View...Coffee

Oh, coffee...I sing thee praises daily. When at home, I drink straight black coffee, typically the Organic Pacific Rim Blend from Whole Foods (it's cheap, despite being from Whole Foods). I drink so much coffee that I can't afford the boutique roasters that charge upwards of $10 a pound. It's good basic coffee. I have an old drip coffee maker although this past weekend, after being reminded how nice a french press can be, I may have to switch back.

I first had coffee when I would go on special shopping trips with my Mama and Grandma. My Mama didn't drive at the time and we lived in Omaha, Nebraska. We'd ride into downtown with my Dad and then take a bus to Lincoln to spend the day with my Grandma. It was a glamorous day for a 7 year old. First off, I'd get to skip school. We'd get to see the big 1930s bus terminal with its amazing murals. An hour ride took us to Lincoln, where we'd get pastries. Halfway through the big day, we'd stop for pie and coffee in a quiet restaurant in one of the old department stores. It was quiet, the sort of place where ladies would lunch and all you could hear was the gentle tinkle of dainty cups upon saucers and soft piano music. I would have a cup of coffee swimming in sugar and milk.

I didn't pick up coffee again until I was a moody teen, spending many late nights at Deux Gros Nez (an infamous coffee shop in Reno, now quite sadly defunct). My drink was the cappuccino, which still has a tender place in my heart. No one takes beautiful cappuccino photos like Sandra of Smoosch. Every time I see one of her coffee photos, I have a strong yearning to drop whatever I am doing to get a cup.

Now, my favorite coffee shop in town is a little place called Bibo. It's interior seating leaves much to be desired (not nearly enough seats), but when the weather is nice, one can sit outside under the trees, oogle other peoples dogs and bikes. That's where the photo above was taken...I like the idea of taking photos of clouds in my coffee. Always loved that song.

So there you have it, another rambling Corner View from yours truly...visit some other picturesque spots on the web and have a cuppa...

Amazing. I would love to try doing this but I have the distinct feeling that Ms. Schreiber is so talented that she made it look easy. Found via design*sponge.

Tooting My Own Horn

This morning, I picked up the project that I toiled upon for the past few months. I got an A+. Glowing, glowing...

I cleaned the house this morning so I think this weekend calls for buckets of fun (well, maybe with a dash of yard work). Hope you bask in the glow of something lovely this weekend too.

I Like How She Thinks

I heard on the podcast "To the Best of our Knowledge" (episode "American Classic") about the artist Anissa Mack. They discussed her project, "Pies for a Passerby" in which she set up a tiny gingerbread cottage outside the Brooklyn Public Library and baked apple pies. She put them on the windowsill, tempting people to steal them (which they did). I also adore her "Last Full Weekend in September" project. Check her out.

Corner View...The Great Outdoors

I've been bringing my little corner of the outdoors in, enjoying the scent of spring.

Flowers are popping up blue, purple, yellow, pink, white, and red all over the yard.

And yes, this is a very sorry excuse for a post about the great outdoors. My fellow townie, Vanessa, did it up right.

I am still decompressing from my school semester. I've been waking up early and jumping upon the list of things that I've wanted to tackle for the past six months but haven't had time. I'm also trying to force myself to take a little break too, but I'm not good at sitting still. Good thing I've started reading this book.

Back soon with photos of the finished sweater, new knitting projects and other musings. In the meantime, visit these lovely folks from all over the world...

Five on Friday

...word prompts courtesy of Kidlet.

Feel(ing) the aftereffects of last night's migraine. Oof. I've had two this year after not having them since I was a kid. The migraine aura is the worst part of it for me. Kicks the anxiety into high gear, it does.

Seem(s) like it's going to be a beautiful weekend full of warm weather, gardening, champagne (it is Mother's Day, after all), family, and love.

Need to give hubby a hug.

Sweep? Probably need to do that, but I'm going to let it ride for this week. Y'know, I'm not going to push it (the broom, that is). Heh heh.

Seek quiet and balance. This is my new goal.

Have a lovely weekend, mothers, pet mothers, women who have decided not to be mothers, and all you boys too (umm, all two or three of you that read this).

Corner View...Shopping

(image from Collier’s, April 15, 1955, 42-3.)

Well, I finally finished my research paper for school and it was all about looking at advertisements featuring women in popular magazines during 1935, 1945 and 1955. At this point, I could tell you a fair amount about the shopping habits of the women of that time period. Since, I've spent the past 19 hours of the past 36 writing on the paper, I didn't get any photos of how we shop. But here's my story...

As far as my shopping habits, my mom, Kidlet and I go shopping together for our weekly groceries on Saturdays. I wish it were possible to go to shopping daily on my way home from work (preferably as I glide along on a cute bike with a woven basket), buying wine from the wine shop, cheese from the cheesemonger, bread from the baker etc.. While there is a wonderful baker and wine shop fairly close to my work, it would be an extravagance of time (and gasoline) to try and shop that way in our town. Everything is spaced far apart and the fact that I don't get home until after 5:30 (and that is without making any stops) would make it impossible for me to get home, make dinner, have time with the family and get to bed at a reasonable hour. Instead, I'm the mistress of planning, planning out the week's meals and buying most of what we need at once. I do have to stop at the store occasionally to pick something up I may have forgotten (the horror!) or a fresh vegetable if one has gone wiggly, but I try to avoid it if possible.

For more of the round the world shopping trip, visit our lovely hostess Jane and the rest of the gang...ladybug-zen, ian, bonnie, esti, sophie, cele, modsquad, caitlin, joyce, couturecoucou, kim, a day that is dessert, natsumi, epe, kaylovesvintage, trinsch, c.t.,jeannette, outi, schanett, ritva, dongdong, francesca, state of bliss, jennifer, dana, denise, cabrizette, bohemia girl, ruth, dianna, isabelle, amber, a girl in the yellow shoes, mister e, janis, kari, jgy, jenna, skymring, elizabeth, audrey, allison, lise, cate, mon, victoria, crescent moon, erin, otli, amy, ida, caroline, lisa, dorte, kimmie, la lune dans le ciel, nicola, malo, vanessa (hi, home girl!), britta, virgina, aprilsunnymama, samanthakarenkristinaangelina

A Study in Studying

Got up at 5:15 this morning and got started. Stopped around 7 to shower and go to breakfast with my little family (huevos rancheros=brainfood). 10 am finds me in the school library. It's 12:30 now. I plan on being here until 5 or until I can write no more about women, advertising, culture, and domestic roles. Whew. At least this thing is due on Tuesday and that means I have to be done with it soon. Onward, mes amies...

Corner View...Transportation

Transportation, eh? Well, I drive a very practical, economical car that takes us from place to place reliably. However, I'd rather ride this...

my poor, neglected bicycle. At least I will have the opportunity to ride it to work during the summer when my husband is off (he teaches) and can take Kidlet to her school program. It's a mighty fine bike.

A few Ani transportation facts...

1. I did not get my driver's license until I was 18 (a late bloomer here in the states, as you can obtain it the day you turn 16).

2. I did not get my first car until I was 28. It was my parent's 20-year-old car.

3. I had a wonderful motor scooter (which I adored) when I was 21.

4. I only like to drive cars with manual transmission. I don't like automatics.

5. My favorite mode of transportation is a tie between trains or walking. I was happy to hear my President say that he was going to look into a national high-speed rail system (despite the fact it has no current plans to go anywhere near my town).

6. And I always drive when my husband and I go somewhere together.

Take a trip around the world! It's Corner View day!

Bits and Bobs

This morning while Kidlet and I were driving to drop her off at her school, we were listening to NPR as they were discussing the swine flu. I mentioned to Kidlet that it might a be good time to renew our commitment to wash our hands thoroughly at various times in the day. I also explained a little about flu symptoms. Then she pipes up "Wine flu? Wine flu? What is that?" "Well, sweetie, that's when someone drinks too much wine and they feel a little sick and queasy the next day."

Finished knitting the sweater. Blocked the sweater. Figured out button placement. Had a few minutes this morning so I started to sew on the first button. Thread breaks. Button breaks. That's the breaks.

Every possible free moment is taken up by my investigation of advertisements from 1935, 1945 and 1955. The primary lesson to be learned is that you had better use lots of hand cream to battle dishpan hands so you can catch (or keep) a husband with those soft hands. I think I may be in trouble, if that is the case. I could put on a quart of lotion a day and never have smooth, soft hands. I only have a week left to finish this paper and it feels like it is very much in the limbo stage, still searching for a voice.

Making a list of items to be done around the house, inside and out, after I'm done with this class. The list is daunting. Anyone feel like doing a little late pruning on 20 rose bushes? How about installing a new toilet or finishing the flooring that we started 7 years ago? I also am lining up a slew of books for summer reading. Some are rereads, some are new: One Hundred Years of Solitude, a couple of John Updike's Rabbit books, Maeve Brennan, finish The Audacity of Hope, New Moon (gotta have some 'lite' summer reading too, although when I read the first book of the series, I couldn't help but think I could write a better angsty teen vampire novel), the newest Moomin comic collection. I'm also planning my next knitting move. I've got legwarmers for Kidlet, more Toasty, Ishbel, Fantine and finishing hubby's socks upon my mental queue. I think I'm going to need more than just a summer to do it all, but I can dream.

Corner View...Breakfast

Welcome to Wednesday and another edition of Corner View. This week features a personal favorite of mine...breakfast.

I've always been a breakfast person; never have I been one to skip or skimp on breakfast. For approximately four years, I ate the same thing every weekday for breakfast: granola, yogurt and honey (fruit added if something good was in season). I never got tired of it but I did finally decide to change it a couple months ago. Now my daily is some sort of cereal in rice milk. And I drink coffee. Buckets and buckets of coffee. I'm on a serious coffee kick. It's this semester of school that's doing it to me, I swear.

Friday is different, however. Kidlet and I share a big plate of toast. We top our toasts with the following: Nutella, Jam, and the last with butter, cinnamon and sugar. Another key ingredient to our Friday toast feast is listening to cheesy old rock and roll, preferably at increased volume. Not sure how this tradition came about, but here is a link to the first instance of "Rock and Roll Friday".

On Saturdays, we go out to breakfast with my mom. Sundays, I make breakfast for us and whomever shows up. Usually I make pancakes (you know I had to be 'pancakemama' for some reason...) but sometimes waffles are on the menu. On nights when my husband works late, Kidlet and I have breakfast for dinner. Here you can see last Wednesday night's pancakes. I have a nice long story about the best pancakes I ever had, but that will have to wait for another day as that, my friends, is probably more than you want to know about my breakfasts.

If you want to take a trip around the world, here's a list of others who are playing along, enjoy! Jane is our lovely hostess who came up with the idea...

Fairytale Town '09--Long Day, Short Tale.

It was a gorgeous day, just like summer. Flowers were in abundance. Fun with friends, a yummy picnic, viewing and taking part in the beauty of life. I snapped 142 photos yesterday! Tired. Wishing today was not a work day...oh well, at least I have happy warm memories of a day spent out of doors.

Love and Happiness

The sun is back, warmth is here and getting positively summery by the weekend. I am so looking forward to it. We are taking the annual spring trip to Fairytale Town, I'm making pizza, I'm hoping to finish knitting my sweater (just in time for warm weather, ha ha). But I also have lots of work to do...

I only have one more big hoop (and three little hoops) to jump through before the end of the semester. I love this class even though it has left me sleep-deprived. This has been the most eye-opening class I have ever taken. Conceptions that I have grown up with have been turned on their ear. I'll stop gushing (and start getting back to work).

I hope you have a wonderful weekend, friends.

Corner View

I forgot to mention that I'm playing along on Wednesdays with Jane of Spain Daily. Every week we are posting bits and bobs from our little spot in the world.

This is our (cloudy, today) view of the city from the top of our hill in the yard. When there are fireworks down in town, you can sometimes see them from this little spot. You can also see my favorite tree on the left hand side. Supposedly, that tree is the largest cedar tree in our area. It's beautiful and I always hope that my neighbors that own it love it as much as I do (and never cut it down!). There were flurries of snow when I climbed up the hill to snap this photo; by this weekend, we are supposed to be having early summer-type temperatures. That is mountain-desert living in a nutshell.

Enjoy your Wednesday!

Sunnyday

Rufus and Chaka Khan in my headphones, just ate a margarita jellybean, the sun is shining and I'm sitting next to a huge picture window overlooking campus. My spreadsheets, advertisements and books strewn about me on a big table. Not a bad way to spend an Easter afternoon. Sure, I'd like to be at the nursery buying a little plant, but this will do. Getting stuff done. Yeah. Get back to it!

Enjoy your day! And well wishes to my peeps (Boo and Baby Bunny) who are at home (Baby Bunny is kind of sick). See you two in a few hours...

Slice of Morning

I'm making my grocery list, sorting through recipes. I'm tired, but a cup of coffee is at my side. Searching for the hot cross bun recipe. Perusing bread recipes gets my spirits soaring! And the rain! Such a nice surprise. Whoops! Rain just turned to snow. But Billie is singing so it's ok.

Happy weekend, friends. Hope you are seeing signs of growth all around...

Dreaming in Technicolor

I've been working, working, working on my project for school. I wish I had a year to work on it; there's so much information I need to assess and so little time to do it. I've looked at so many magazines from the 1955 that I had started dreaming in technicolor. Now I've stepped back twenty years into the Depression and the ads reflect the times: black and white, eating 3 cubes of yeast a day to stay healthy, living on $25 a week and feeding a family of seven. My mood now matches. Evidently those ads are doing their job.

I can't begin to tell you how overwhelmed I am by school at this moment. My hours of sleep are shrinking daily. I'm an 11 pm to 5 am girl now. Oh, May, I can't wait for your arrival.

I'm 2.5 inches away from finishing February Lady. I only hope I can eek her out before the weather changes for the warmer. At this rate, I'll have time...one warm day, three cold ones, one warm day...

I'll be back soon with the weight of 1945 on my shoulders. Cheers!

Monday and a List of Stuff

--Got a good amount of work done for school this weekend; I'm almost ready to finally get some work done on my final project. Yikes! This class keeps me so busy that I'm finding it difficult to get ahead.

--Going to the advisor this morning to get the status update of how much longer I need to drag myself to school. Hope he can get into my student records, because I surely can't.

--Registration for fall classes are on Tuesday. With the budget cuts, the selection is paltry. Really awful.

--We have hot and cold running days around here. Saturday was perfect, Sunday was cold.

--I finished a sleeve on my February Lady and then learned that purling in the round gives you reverse stockinette, not garter. I ripped back and amended the situation as best I could as I had already broken off the yarn and garter takes more yarn than reverse stockinette. I'm calling my abbreviated garter section "a design element." I have many "design elements" in my sweater. However, I did weave in all the ends so I just need to bust out a sleeve, put on some buttons, block and go. I'm hoping, hoping that I'll get to wear it before summer.

--Dropped my camera on Friday and thought it was "game over." That's what I get for discussing a possible dream career as a photographer. Happily, hubby manhandled the camera back into working order. Thanks, boo!

--How much laundry can one family of three have? I feel like I've been running the washer non-stop for the past 36 hours.

Friday, March 27, 2009

After sending another coworker to my favorite farmer's website, I noticed they had linked to my flickr set for last year's CSA. After emailing back and forth, I offered up my services to take photos of the entire season for use on their website, newsletters, etc.. As I was standing at the front desk at work, picking up my egg delivery and talking to my farmer about the photo thing, the receptionist said "Are you a photographer?" I demurred, "No, but I like to take pictures." She told me of a dilemma her band is having with a cover photo for their upcoming CD. She asked if they needed help, would I lend them a hand? I said, "Sure, but I'm no pro."

So, there you have it. I'd better calibrate my monitor; my photos have been looking dark lately. Isn't it about time I bought one of these or these or ...? Ha ha. It still won't make me a brilliant photographer but at least it's all in fun.

Meet Anna...

She's a bit of an egg-head...

But she does have personality...

She received much love the first two days Kidlet received her, including songs about how much she was loved despite her lack of rosy cheeks, but Anna has now been relegated to watching over her bed. It's probably just as well as Anna's hair has a few issues which could lead to baldness down the line.

I had fun making this doll. The pattern is Poppy by Ysolda Teague. I preferred knitting her up on 3 needles as opposed to the suggested two for the body and limbs. I also added length to the arms as Anna's proportions seemed to be a little off. For the dress, I did increases in 3 areas every 3 rows in order to make it a little more a-line. The hair gave me fits and I had to do some serious last minute doctoring to make Anna's receding hairline less of an issue (although it is still an issue). However, as this was the first doll I've ever made and the first time I've dealt with hair, it gave me many ideas of how to conquer that beast next time (and I even made detailed notes showing myself how to do it). All in all, I'm satisfied. :)

I Love...

I love the roller coaster ride known as Spring. Blustery one day, green the next.

I really love green. And grey too. I love the idea that I might soon be able to wear a dress with the sun shining down upon me.

I love being done with the crazy planning and execution of Birthday Week 2009. I love looking forward to the weekend with no plans except for pizza making, spending time in the growing warmth, and a ton of school writing (ok, that part I don't love so much). I love it when a plan comes together...huh?

Anyway, things have been quiet, but busy (always busy). Just trying to settle back into the rhythm of school as last week was spring break, not that that means much for me as I'm still working, etc.. I've been mentally blogging but haven't actually put fingers to keyboard. I still have the finished doll to present (and as I predicted, it just hangs out on Kidlet's bed), some photo news, attempts in attitude shifting...I'm hoping I'll manage to get these all out into the world soon. Back soon, friends.

This is the post where you can tell I'm tired and grumpy

Whew. Busy weekend but not much to show for it but a full belly. I wanted to take a photo of the soup I was making this morning, split pea with leeks and dill. It was such a beautiful range of greens but I know from experience that trying to take a photo of a pot of steaming ingredients proves rather difficult.

This is the start of Birthday Week 2009, aka The Big Five. This means this mama will be a busy bee: finishing up the doll that I have knit for the small birthday person, lining up decorations and goodie bags, making lists upon lists.

The doll. Oh, the doll. I used this pattern and I'm wishing I had made one before I started making this one for a special occasion. I spent 2+ hours on her hair Friday night, redoing it three times. It still is as wonky as it could possibly be but it is what it is. It makes me feel a bit of a failure, like I'm less of a good mama for not taking it apart and doing it over but there just isn't enough time. I made an elaborate set of notes for myself for the point in time where I either make a new doll or abscond with this one once Kidlet has tossed it aside (probably 10 minutes after she opens it, as this is the fate of all knitted toys I give to her). The doll body itself came out pretty well although it's strange to me that the pattern asks you to knit in the round divided over two dpn's as opposed to three, making for some unusual stitch tension issues. I finally used my better judgment and put the doll on three needles. All that's left is knitting the body of the dress and embroidering the face. I'm trying to tell myself it's charming. I'll post a photo once she sees the light of day.

I am trying to keep the smell of the air as I left the house this morning (cool and slightly damp) and the amazing clouds in my mind. It feels like an early spring day. Hope you have a nice pot of something warm and comforting on the stove and are finding signs of spring...

Sunday Afternoon

Flower arranging work.

Perhaps a late, late entry for a 'green week' post?

Sitting on top of the hill in the yard, mentally sketching out the areas I want to concentrate on in the yard this year.

Freshly made french bread for dinner (and lunch today).

This morning, there's a bitter north wind that's blowing snow horizontally. It's definitely not what I expected after yesterday's pre-spring conditions. I don't think the weather folks expected it either. Sigh. Off to the work of the day...fixing computers, trying to figure out how to connect a scale for weighing packages, data entry...y'know, the usual stuff.

Guerrilla Green

A little found crochet on campus. Ahhh, to be young and have time to do cool things.

Nothing green to see here...

I aimed my camera at things I thought I wanted to photograph today. It was so blindingly bright after last night's snow, I couldn't really see.

Struggling to finish this week's reading journal that happens to be due in 11 hours. Listening to Carstairs Radio in one ear and laundry tossing about in the dryer in the other. So tired. Dare I say that this week's reading journal might be a wee bit weak? Yes. My critical thinking tool has already shuffled off to bed. I'd better follow suit and attempt to finish it after a refreshing 6.75 hour nap.
